Through months of preparation, technical work, and collaboration, TRI successfully distributed laptops and Chromebooks to Afghan refugees newly resettled in the San Diego area.

This event represents a continued commitment to the belief that technology is a vital resource that opens doors to education, employment, and opportunity. It also highlights the strength of a partnership between TRI and IRC that has grown steadily over time, built on a shared mission to empower refugee families through access to digital tools, slowly closing the digital divide.

Empowering Through Digital Connection

Each device distributed during the event served as more than a piece of hardware. With the support of student volunteers and interpreters, refugee families received hands-on help with device setup and usage, ensuring they could begin using their new laptops immediately. These tools are intended to support English language learning, job searching, virtual appointments, and more.

For many recipients, this marked their first experience with personal technology in the United States. The ability to engage with online platforms provided an essential step forward in navigating a new life, connecting with family abroad, and building independence.

TRI's Ongoing Mission to Uplift

This most recent distribution reaffirmed TRI’s core mission: to use technical skill and service to deliver real-world impact. TRI students refurbished and prepared each laptop themselves, drawing on their growing expertise in device repair and digital literacy. Their efforts reflect a deep sense of community, ensuring that no family is left behind in the digital age.

As with past events, this effort was not only about the technology, but about trust, dignity, and empowerment. By providing personalized support and culturally responsive engagement, TRI volunteers helped create a welcoming environment where families felt seen and supported.

A Sustained Commitment to Equity

The roots of this initiative stretch back to the pandemic. Since then, TRI has been working with IRC to identify ways to address digital access among refugees. Now, the collaboration has grown, resulting in multiple donation events and continued outreach.

In an era where connectivity is closely tied to opportunity, these devices have become bridges to education, communication, and employment. All of which are critical steps toward self-sufficiency and stability.

Looking Ahead

As the Technology Relief Initiative reflects on this milestone, it extends its gratitude to the International Rescue Committee for its continued partnership and leadership. Together, TRI and IRC have demonstrated the lasting impact that comes when youth-led innovation meets community-based service.

Looking forward, TRI remains committed to expanding its reach, increasing its capacity to repair and distribute devices, and identifying new communities in need of support. Each device delivered represents a step toward closing the digital divide and lighting the way for a brighter future.

To learn more about the Technology Relief Initiative and how you can contribute, visit www.technologyrelief.org or contact the team at contact@technologyrelief.org. This initiative aimed not only to equip new students with the basics of computer hardware repair and software updates but also to foster a sense of societal responsibility and engagement. All participants shared a common goal: to make a positive difference in the world by narrowing the digital divide.

Learning and Giving Back: A Journey of Impact

Together with bright minds from Del Norte High School, our current TRI team passed the reins over to our newcomers with a lesson on computer hardware and software, gaining hands-on experience in diagnosing and repairing common issues, upgrading system software, and optimizing device performance. Guided by our experienced mentors, students tinkered with laptops and Chromebooks, transforming outdated gadgets and broken devices into functional tools that would empower underserved communities. These students didn't just see a broken laptop; they saw a bridge to a brighter tomorrow for those who might not have access to modern technology otherwise.

TRI mentors teach newcomers to identify and replace critical computer hardware

Preparing for Global Impact

Beyond the immediate benefits of the Summer Workshop, this initiative has set its sights on an even larger stage. The skills acquired during the workshop are not just tools for personal growth, but essential building blocks for future collaborations and careers. TRI's efforts will soon extend beyond borders, as they prepare for the 2023 Summer Distribution events with global organizations like the International Rescue Committee. Del Norte High School students are at the forefront of this movement, ready to apply their newfound expertise on a global scale.

A Call to Action

TRI's Summer Workshop served as a testament to the potential of local communities to enact positive change. As these Del Norte High School students worked to mend these donated devices, they were also mending the gap in digital access, one laptop at a time.

To get involved, make a donation, or learn more about Technology Relief Initiative's mission, please visit www.technologyrelief.org or reach out via email at contact@technologyrelief.org. They do this by providing beds, free meals, and training to their clients. They have partnered with food banks and other nonprofits for food, equipment, and other amenities.

The nonprofit organization had been dealing with an influx of volunteers over the summer and were tracking volunteer hours and availability manually, as they were dealing with a lack of equipment and no funds for a tracking software. TRI lent out a hand and donated two iPads to Operation HOPE, enabling them to track volunteer activity efficiently without having to worry about equipment and funding issues.

TRI appreciates Operation HOPE- North County's efforts to fight homelessness. Many people had old phones, laptops, tablets, and PCs that they were willing to donate. In the next 2 weeks, TRI went to twenty households across San Diego to pick up over twenty laptops, five PCs, ten phones, and five tablets. Recently, TRI went to Greystar Real Estate Partners in Escondido to pick up twenty-five laptops they phased out as part of a device overhaul.

In early July, ABC10 news reporter Michael Chen noticed TRI's efforts in bridging the digital divide.
