TRI Students Distribute 20 Laptops to Refugees at IRC El Cajon
Earlier this month, students from Del Norte High School’s Technology Relief Initiative (TRI) partnered with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in El Cajon to distribute 20 refurbished laptops to refugee families. The event was part of TRI’s ongoing effort to bridge the digital divide by providing reliable technology to individuals and families who may not otherwise have access to it.
After weeks of collecting, repairing, and preparing devices, TRI volunteers were able to place laptops directly into the hands of recipients. This distribution not only provided technology, but also helped create new opportunities for education, employment, communication, and personal growth.
Expanding Access Through Technology
For many refugee families, access to a computer is essential for navigating everyday life in a new country. Whether it is applying for jobs, completing school assignments, learning English, accessing online resources, or staying connected with loved ones, technology plays a critical role in building independence and opportunity.
The laptops distributed at IRC El Cajon will help families access these important resources and overcome barriers that can come from limited digital access. What may seem like a simple device can make a meaningful difference in helping families adapt and succeed.
Student-Led Service in Action
One of the most rewarding parts of this event was seeing the direct impact of TRI’s work. Every laptop distributed had been refurbished and prepared by student volunteers, who dedicated their time and technical skills to ensure each device was ready for use.
As a student-led organization, TRI believes that technology can be a powerful tool for service. Through events like this, students are able to combine technical knowledge with community engagement, creating meaningful change both locally and beyond.
Strengthening Our Partnership with IRC
This event also reflects the continued partnership between TRI and the International Rescue Committee. By working together, both organizations are able to identify community needs and provide support where it can have the greatest impact.
Over the years, TRI and IRC have collaborated on multiple device donation efforts, helping refugee families gain access to the technology they need to thrive in today's digital world. Each event strengthens this partnership and expands the number of people who can benefit from digital access.
Looking Ahead
As TRI continues to grow, we remain committed to finding new ways to support underserved communities through technology. The distribution of these 20 laptops is another step toward our goal of making technology more accessible and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to connect, learn, and succeed.
We would like to thank the International Rescue Committee for their continued partnership and all of the volunteers who helped make this event possible. Together, we are working toward a more connected and equitable future through one device at a time.
